There are times when even the most effective oral hygiene routine is still not enough to prevent a small cavity from forming on one of your teeth. While most cavities are detected during your regular dental check up, if you notice pain in one of your teeth or a change in the texture of the tooth enamel, you should call Dr. Peter T. Mathison to have it looked at, before the problem exacerbates.

Most small and medium cavities can be repaired with an ordinary filling made from gold, porcelain, amalgam or composite materials. Many people choose to have novocaine injected into their gums to numb the area before the cavity is repaired.

Dr. Peter T. Mathison will then use a drill to remove the decayed enamel to provide a clean healthy surface to cement a filling in place. Gold and porcelain fillings need to be prepared in a dental lab, and will require a brief follow up appointment. Amalgam and composite fillings can be repaired in that one single session.

The type of material Dr. Peter T. Mathison recommends for your filling will depend on the tooth’s primary function and its appearance in your smile.

If you’ve noticed cavity or other problem area on one of your teeth, you should call Dr. Peter T. Mathison at your earliest convenience, at (701) 478-4500 to schedule an appointment.
